We’ve all heard about the importance of a highly engaged workforce to a productive and competitive organization. The term “employee engagement” has had so much buzz in recent years that it’s on the verge of becoming something of a cliché. As workplaces change and develop, the definition of “engagement” needs to be revised to reflect engagement over the long term – sustainable engagement. Sustainable engagement includes the following three dimensions:

  • Effort – specifically discretionary effort. This is demonstrated when employees exhibit behavior that goes above the basics to get the job done. Some examples include: enthusiasm and interest, going the extra mile for the customer, creative problem solving and working effectively within the team.
