The Giving Hour is a community connectivity engine designed to engage, inspire and better connect all of the outstanding and talented individuals in our community with the many mentorship opportunities available. The goal of The Giving Hour is to engage individuals through their employers, places of worship, favorite nonprofit, or other community membership organizations. The Giving Hour endeavors to unite and uplift the Memphis area by asking the question, “What can an hour of someone’s time spent mentoring mean to the community?” The idea for The Giving Hour originated with a group of professionals who wanted to demonstrate the impact that mentoring has made in their lives and show how it could truly change the lives of others within our community. Establishing and maintaining strong partnerships with various corporations and organizations are key to the sustainability and impact of this network. The Giving Hour is being lead and underwritten by HRO Partners and Austin Baker.
Austin Baker is the co-founder of MILE which is dedicated to creating better leaders in Memphis. Each month we bring in a top notch speaker and the mentors and protégés come together to learn together in a fast paced leadership seminar with team activities, community spotlights, best practice sharing and a great speech by our featured speaker. The teams also work together to learn outside the classroom through mock interviews, job shadowing, community volunteering efforts, internships and one-to-one mentor protégé coaching. With the mission of eliminating the barriers associated with entering the post-secondary pipeline, tnAchieves launched as a universal last-dollar community and technical college scholarship that paired students with volunteer mentors and required its students to complete at least 8 hours of community service each semester. The founders of tnAchieves understood that students, particularly at-risk students, need more than funding to complete college; therefore, tnAchieves offers a holistic approach to student access and success by providing wrap-around supports to students in an effort to increase Tennessee’s post-secondary attainment rate.
TnAchieves continues to provide all the supports necessary for student success. From filing financial aid to hosting summer bridge programs for remedial students, nearly every senior across Tennessee engages with tnAchieves as part of their journey from high school through college.
